Radiation therapy is commonly given alone or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy for early stage (stage I) as well as advanced (stage III) lung cancer.
For early stage lung cancer, a highly focused and powerful form of radiation therapy called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) offers patients greater than 90% chance of success (local control) using a limited number of treatments (usually 3-5 treatments). For more advanced disease, a combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery is utilized to optimize the chance of cure. At UCLA, we offer state of the art technologies to treat early stage lung cancer with SBRT, as well as clinical protocols to increase the intensity of radiation therapy and shorten the treatment course for more advanced lung cancers.
The UCLA Department of Radiation Oncology utilizes a state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography CT scanner (PET/CT) for the planning of your radiation therapy when it is appropriate. We are one of the few radiation oncology departments in the country that has a dedicated PET/CT scanner used solely for the purpose of planning radiation treatments.
